How To Make Your Own
Rain Gauge

Explore weather science with kids by making your own rain gauge! This fun and educational activity teaches tamariki how to measure rainfall while crafting a simple device from a soft drink bottle. Perfect for observing and learning about rainfall.

What You'll Need

  • Clear soft drink bottle

  • Ruler

  • Marker pen

  • Scissors

  • Stones

Instructions

  1. Take the lid off a soft drink bottle and cut the top section off.

  2. Use a ruler and pen to mark the measurements on the side of the bottle. Begin your measuring just above the base of the bottle.

  3. Put some stones in the bottom of the bottle and fill the base with water to the point where you started your measuring.

  4. Slide the inverted top into the base

  5. Find a place outside where it will not get knocked over. Make sure it is not under a tree or too close to a building so that will reduce the amount of rain that is collected.

  6. Wait for it to rain and measure how much rain has fallen
