How To Make Your Own
Self-Watering Garden In A Bottle
Create a self-watering garden in a bottle with your kids for a fun and educational gardening project! This easy activity teaches tamariki about plant care and watering systems while they build their own mini garden using recycled materials. Perfect for nurturing seeds or seedlings!
What You'll Need
-
Empty soft drink bottle
-
Scissors/craft knife
-
Drill
-
Twine
-
Stones
-
Potting mix
-
Seeds or Seedlings
Instructions
-
Cut the bottle in half
-
Remove the cap and drill 2-3 holes in it
-
Thread 2-3 lengths of garden twine through each of the holes and put a knot in each one on the inside of the cap. Leave about 5cms of twine on the outside of the cap to go inside the 'pot'
-
Screw the cap back on the bottle
-
Place some stones in the base of the bottom half of the bottle.
-
These help to keep the pot stable
-
Place the top half of the bottle upside down in the bottom half. This now becomes the pot. The cap should be pointing down with the lengths of twine resting around the stones in the base
-
Fill the pot with potting mix
-
Dampen potting mix, and sow seeds or plant a seedling in the potting mix
-
Add water to the base of the pot so that it is above the level of the stones and the twine is sitting in it
-
Place in a warm light place to grow
